Biography
Multi Manitoba Loud Music Award winner, Matt Cory lives and breathes hard rock. He doesn’t stylistically fit with typical stigmas of the typical Manitoba Music, he has always played to the beat of his own drum and can back it up with catchy riffs and a captivating stage presence. He has dabbled in many different genres, ranging from alternative metal to indie-folk, although his heart is in heavy rock of a variety of styles. Matt’s earliest influences come from hard and heavy classic rock ranging from Alice in Chains, Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper. Matt isn’t just a musician, he is a fan of music with an incredible wealth of knowledge of the varying styles that have captivated fans over multiple decades.
Matt began fronting his own band in 2018 as lead vocalist and lead guitarist, covering songs from Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and Filter. After a year of fronting a cover band, Matt released his solo EP titled, Scars on the Ceiling. Later in 2019, Matt released his followup EP titled, Day of Reckoning. The work is guitar driven, reminiscent of something between early 90's grunge and 80's metal.
Cory released four EP’s in 2020 with varying styles including an instrumental, acoustic, metal and hard rock. Matt had written, recorded, mixed and mastered everything himself on each release.
During the Pandemic, Matt decided to explore his more experimental side and released three singles; an electronic inspired melodic foot-tapper titled Goodbye, a cover of the Cheap Trick classic power ballad, The Flame and a show favorite instrumental titled, Insomnia.
As 2022 unraveled, Matt was able to return to the stage with his solo band playing dates all over Western Manitoba including The Manitoba Loud Music Awards. Matt collaborated with former NHL player, Ryan White by performing guitar on the theme song for his podcast, Whitey’s World.
Aside from performing dates across Manitoba, including various Winnipeg shows, festivals and various special events, 2023 saw the release of the EP, Ghost Rising, featuring the Manitoba Loud Music Awards nominated Single of the Year, Lit Up and Out of Line. Cory later took home a staggering three awards, including Guitarist of the Year, Vocalist of the Year and Rock Band of the Year at the MLMA.
Cory released his next EP titled, Let’s Go Downtown in 2024. With a fun, raunchy vibe of the 1970's engrained in each song, it was inspired by the New Wave of Classic Rock bands including Greta Van Fleet, Ghost, Rival Sons and more. He also released an accompanying music video for the title track, which he wrote and directed. Matt released a followup single, Runaway (Can’t Hear a Thing) about a spooky experience he had staying in a haunted house. It marked a return to his heavier style and is currently his top streamed song on Spotify.
Looking into 2025, Matt plans on releasing two EPs. One will be instrumental and the other will be in the similar vein of hard rock that listeners have come to expect.
Matt Cory is currently an independent artist and all his music is available anywhere you can stream music. When he’s not on stage, you’ll find him in his studio writing or teaching guitar.
